  • Saw this while I was on holiday.

    The Healey Mills one is very sad. Those locomotives had a good 15-20 years useful life left in them, but were surplus to requirements. Part of the railway privatisation deal was that the new companies couldn’t scrap redundant locomotives, they had to put them up for sale by tender.

    EWS (As they were then, owned by Winsconsin Central) didn’t want them falling into the hands of potential competitors, and weren’t even willing to sell them for preservation lest the preservationists turned out to be fronts for commercial operators who wanted to use the locomotives to haul freight.

    So they just left them in sidings to rot, and only put the up for sale once they were so far gone that only scrap merchants or really dedicated preservationists would be interested.

  • That is so sad. A shame that EWS had that attitude.
